A Storm Proof Legacy
I'm excited right now because my daughters are playing in the beautiful Gulf of Mexico this week! Although I moved away from the Pensacola area 20 years ago, I've never forgotten those golden days we spent on Santa Rosa Island during the 70s, 80s and 90s. Those memories became bedtime stories for my children.
Today, as I listened to them describe the sights and sounds of Pensacola Beach, it was obvious to me that much has changed since I left. Whether the changes happened in the wake of yet another hurricane or due to progress, I can't help feeling a sense of loss and the need to connect the (good things) from the past with my family's present and future.
What follows is a plan of sorts for tying sailor's knots in the broken ends of our family history rope to ensure continuity. When the girls return, I will:
- Encourage them to talk about their trip and share their perceptions of the people and places they've visited.
- Compare their pictures of the island today with my decades-old photographs and look for something familiar to all of us.
- I may even ask them to tell me a bedtime story...

Non-stick Nirvana
Okay, I may need to get out more but scrambling eggs this morning in my new non-stick frying pan just eclipsed the recent presidential campaigns on my list of "Most Memorable Events". I awakened this morning to a daunting "To-do" list that contained fully half of yesterday's unfinished list and I almost crawled back under the covers. Then I remembered that I had a new skillet to try out and the resulting burst of energy left me reeling.
I decided that the skillet must prove itself worthy of inhabiting cabinet space and gleefully pulled the egg carton out of the fridge. After all, I had bought it at a local discount-outlet-catchall store and couldn't be sure of its pedigree. I also wanted to use the pan before the kids got to it first.
Well I can happily report that the eggs slid from pan to plate like water off a duck's back, hence the non-stick nirvana experience. Clean-up took just a couple minutes; not so with the cheese grits in the adjacent pot. I have chosen not to dwell on that, however.
I will instead take every opportunity to gaze upon the pristine surface of my new pan and be reminded that sometimes in life, a problem can turn out to be not such a big deal after all. Don't get stressed out, do something.
Why are you still standing there? Go ahead and splurge on that upgrade; you'll be glad that you did. Now maybe you'll have time for a little rest and relaxation. If only someone would invent a non-stick coating for one's life.

Celebrate Relaxation Day 2012!!
Relaxation Day Rocks at La Bella Baskets!!
Okay, I have two questions for you:
1. What's stressing you out right now?
2. What are you going to do about it?
If you're busy juggling life's bowling pins and flaming swords like most of us, it wasn't hard to answer question #1. What about question #2? Some well-meaning person told me years ago to "Pray like it all depends on God and work like it all depends on you." How the heck is that supposed to work? Doesn't one action cancel out the other? Anyway, it sounded really deep so I tried to follow the older-and-wiser sage's advice.
I set out with good intentions, but somewhere along the way I got confused at to which one of us was depending on whom. Perhaps I subconsciously tried to lighten His load because He has so many more bowling pins and swords to manage than I do.
Whatever the reasons, all I know is that I now find it hard to justify my down time, even when my body demands it. It's a sure sign of a life out of balance when you have to schedule a soak in that beautiful garden tub you had installed for just such occasions and actually bring the cell phone in there, "just in case".
